Unable to open word & excel files

when i open the word file, below the screen it shows running virus scan & a dialogue box appears which says: file is not available.
however, i sent the attachment of documents to my friend & he can open the same files in his computer.
there seems to be some software related problems in my PC.
I tried all possible ways, but its not working, pls. help...

What version of office are we talking about here. I am guessing its 2003. Do you have a virus scanner ?
