Dvd will not burn, unless i uninstall driver

when i try to burn a dvd, it copies fine, but when i insert a blank disc to burn, it burns between 3% & as much as 70%, then the disc kicks out, and i get a message... burn failed would you like to try again... usually if i uninstall the drivers for the dvd drives, and reboot, it will burn successfully. could this be a hardware problem? any help would be greatly appreciated.
