I'm running Windows XP professional

on my desktop, when i turn it on it comes up saying:

"we apologise for the inconvienience, but windoes did not start successfully"

it then gives me the options of:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Start Windows Normally

whenever I select anyone of these, the computer freezes and doesn't respond.

I've tried hitting f8 and with every option I choose the computer still freezes but this time goes to a black screen.

sometimes when i power on it says something along the lines of:

"multiple Bios attempts have failed, press F4 to enter Bios Setup"

when I start up I can still access Bios options (with f4) or the troubleshooter options (with F8) yet no matter what i try it still freezes upon selecting any mode to start on.

any one have any ideas if this can be repaired or should I (regrettably) throw it away?

Have you had any new hardware installed prior to this issue.
Recent Software installation?
Recent Microsoft updates? - Thats always a good candidate for scr***ng up your computer.

Do you have an XP install CD? or can you get one. You just need it to get into command consul.

get back with the info, and see where we go from there

Cheers for the quick response.

there's been nothing new installed, software or hardware, as I haven't used my desktop computer in about a year.

I could get my hands on an XP install CD, but I'd have to dig it out the next time I return to my parents house.

what would I need to do if I got my hands on an XP install disk?

Also, if you can't wait to get your XP cd, then you may want to try this

Home page for HirensbootCd
https://www.hirensbootcd.org/
http://www.hirensbootcd.net/documents.html
http://www.hirensbootcd.net/download.html
http://www.hirensbootcd.net/usb-booting.html

booting from the cd from that site you can pretty much bring a dead pc back to life. I have on many occasion.
Have a good read of the second link, it will explain how to use the disk.
