Gateway Notebook Recovery

Hello,
I have a Gateway Notebook running on OS Windows XP home edition. I hit F11 and followed the instructions but when it finally comes up to the Windows screen that you only take moments or minutes that says "Please wait..." the computer did nothing. I left it on that screen for over night hoping eventually it would do something, but it didn't. Is there any hope for my husband's computer? If so what do I do from here?
