No sound or sound icon

Hello,
Thanks for your reply. I opened the device manager as you suggested and I found yellow marks in front of: Multimedia Audio Controller and SM BUS Controller. I then went to the emachines site and to drivers. My choices were:

Chipset NVIDIA Chipset Driver (Packge) 4.50 35.4 MB 2009/10/20
CardReader eMachines Card Reader Driver 1.1 4.1 MB 2009/10/30
Modem Conexant Modem Driver 7.23.00.00 1.5 MB 2009/11/10
VGA NVIDIA VGA Driver 8.1.3.3 29.5 MB 2009/10/12

I didn't know what to do with these?? Please advise. I'm sorry to be such an amateur!

This is the card for which you must check for updates for the drivers from the manufacturer's site:Chipset NVIDIA Chipset Driver (Packge) 4.50 35.4 MB 2009/10/20

Please check whether the sound driver is properly installed in the Device Manager.

were you able to get this problem solved ? I'm facing the similar problem with Dell D520 ( windows XP ). Pls let me know if you were able to get this solved.
