Computer won't recognise printer thru usb

Hello,

My windows XP will not connect to my desktop printer. I've downloaded the driver, but it just sits there, waiting for me to connect the printer (already connected). I've tried other ports and cables and even another printer. Nothing.

In my control panel there are no printers. I tried to get the computer to detect a plug & play printer, but that doesn't work either.

I'm some what computer savy. But not enough to reboot windows ( as someone suggested)

Any help I can get would be great!
