Hello,

I just got a stripped down Compaq D530p4 2.9ghz 512 mb 40gb desktop. It uses intelextreme graphics 2 card. I attached it to my old monitor (Dell model E773c, 1024x768) and the computer itself starts--fans going, the beep, lights on etc. The problem is that nothing shows up on my monitor. The monitor turns green for two seconds, then goes orange. When I disconnected the monitor, the light on it turned green for good, and for the first time something showed up on the screen telling me that it has been disconnected, so, I assume, the monitor itself works. When I reconnected it to the computer, the light on the monitor turned orange, and the monitor screen went black.

I've been online looking for a manual/user's guide for this computer, and have had no success so far.

What do you think is the problem? Any advice for troubleshooting? I'm not very knowledgeable about computers, but I'm willing to do my best.

Thank you

Jaleh

It could be that the PC is set to a resolution highter than the 1024x768that the monitor can display. The trick is to start windows in "safe mode" by hitting F8 continuously will the pc is booting. Windows will default to 800x600 display. If safe mode works then change the display mode to 1024x768 and 60 hz. The monitor should then work ok after the next boot cycle.

Thank you so very much for your answer; the problem is that the computer is stripped down--no Windows or anything else. I'm trying to install Ubuntu, but I can't get the monitor to work. Also, I just tried a more recent monitor, and that does exactly the same thing.

Am i missing a step here? If you have a stripped-down computer, with no software like Windows etc installed, is there an extra step you need to do?

As I said earlier, I REALLY don't know very much about computers, but I'm willing to try.
