My Macbook pro only sees 250gb out of 500gb

Hello, i just got a new seagate 500gb hdd for my macbook pro 17in 2.16ghz and after i installed it and i when i was trying to install snow leopard it says there is only 250gb and i tried reformatting and restarting and still only 250gb... Is this a common issue or am i doing something wrong? Any help would be great!!

Dear Sir,

There should be some corrupt materials on it causing this to act like this and hence you should have it restored to factory settings or the system repaired.
