Invalid format

Hello,
I have a THTF tv, I bought a VGA cable which worked fine when I first used it, now I get an invalid format message every time I try to connect my laptop to the tv. I have tried changing my resolutions to different ones, have looked it up in my manual and put it to the one that is recommended and still no joy. :-(
