Hello,
May be your hard disk contains bad sectors.
Try this 1.
1) Click on Start --> Run --> type cmd amd click on OK. Command Prompt will be
opened.
Note : Here I assume that the check disk is indicating that the Drive C is having
bad sectors.
Enter the command.
chkntfs /x c: and press Enter.
2) Open "My Computer" --> Right-click on your C drive --> Select "Properties" -->
Click on "Tools" tab--->Click on "Check Now" button.
In "Check Disk" window, select "Automatically fix system file error" and "Scan for
and attempt recovery of bad sectors" options and click on "Start" button.
Good Luck.

when I switch on the cd rom light flicks and a window comes up. normally it stays for about 10 seconds. but sometimes the window goes off withing 2 seconds(that means boot is not ok) and the BIOS window flicks through and the "windows xp" window comes up . In good booting this stays for 20 to 25 seconds. in bad booting the window disappears within 3 seconds and nothing happens later even if I wait for one or two minutes. In such a case I have to press the restart button in the computer. second time sometimes it fails . in the third attempt every thing is ok till I get a message "your disk need checking, you can cancel it by hitting any key (not recommended ) etc. if you allow it takes nearly 15 to 25 minutes for checking to complete and computer boots ok. This is very annoying. sometimes I do hit any key to abort disk checking.
do you need any other information or details. I am not a hardware person. Kindly advise.

Hi venkat1926,
Try to use the trial version of hdtune to test your HDD.
You should also save all what you need. Because when the DD will crash, it will be too late. To clone your HDD, I advice you the free Clonezilla software.
Best regards

than all of you for excellent suggestions.
Jack4roll I tried disk cleaning by using start programmes-accessories- system tools-disk clean up. I do it daily at the end of the day. I also scan and fix errors using "adavnced system care" free version daily.
closeup 22. if I use hardware testing by using your software should I take a copy of C drive or all the drives.
thank you once again all of you. the computer is about five years old and being used daily at least for 6 hours.
thanks once again all of you.

by some trial and error and with the help of friend I solved the problem but another problem has cropped up. Till the booting is complete key board does not work . Only after complete boot up keyboard works. This mean I may not able to go to Bios, or to safe mode etc. I do not know in the trial and error what mistake has occurred.. If by chance disk checking demand comes up I may not be able to abort it by hitting any key.

Hi
@venkat1926
If you already performed all those diagnostics and the same problem occur, therefore you have a faulty hard disk. I have passed what you had now. Now, what I did is replace the faulty hard disk and my headache is gone. No worries, No hassle. Best remedy.
