Help trouble using win7 with sd card

I have a HP DV6-2155dx OS Win 7. I own a Nikon CoolPix 6000. I have downloaded Nikon Transfer, HP Photosmart and also View NX. I have called HP tec support and they told me to install HP PhotoSmart. I am very new to this and I have gone back to the place where I purchased the PC and they were of no help. The first time around I had someone remove the pics from the SD card and put them on the computer. Later I went back and noticed that the pics were much smaller in size and in 2 different folders one being public. In the past when using XP, pics were easy to download and the pics were the size of my screen. I am so very lost as you can tell. I am starting to dislike Wins 7 more and more. Please! Can anyone help me with this? :-)
