Uploading music to a new ipod

Hello,

We have recently purchased a new ipod and cannot seem to get the music to upload to the new ipod. I get the new hardware message on the computer, but that is it. When I go to itunes, I don't find the new ipod. We have other ipods and when plugged into the computer, they show up in itunes. Please let me know if I am missing a step with the new ipod?
