Hi there,

I have a HP Pavilion entertainment PC with Windows Vista. My friend gave me a USB Flash Drive with some data which he got from his personal laptop with a Windows XP configuration. For some reason my PC is unable to read the flash drive as it prompts me to format it before I can use it. Surely this woul delete all the information that I need to gain access to?

SOS! Please!

Download a Linux distribution, i.e ubuntu.com then burn the iso to a cd. Then load the live CD, insert your usb that the crappy windows wont recognize, save the data on one of your partitions and then return again on windows to format the usb stick.
You can find a lot of video tutorials on youtube for how to use a ubuntu live cd without making any changes to your actual operating system. Its easy.
