WD hard drive not showing files

Hello,

Please help me as I have 10 years of saved items on this hard drive. My brother has did a check on the hard drive and it was checking 34 files and then checked empty space. The files ARE there as why would it check the 34 files.......but when I plug it in the F files show none of them. I have 10 years of family history research on this hard drive and its breaking my heart, have I lost everything. Please help me try and sort this, tried it on other PC's but nothing, it's saying file empty...........but why check 34 files if it's empty!!!!!!
