Dell mini 1018 Volume icon stays muted

Hello,

I have Windows 7 home premium on my inspiron mini and the volume icon always says it is muted unless I have headphones plugged in. It sometimes plays sound without headphones but it seems like the volume control keys have no effect, and sometimes I just have to mash the mute button to get it to play at all. Even when I click on the icon I can move the slider and it will change the volume and beep but the icon still says it is muted. I've tried everything I can think of, which is basically just troubleshooting so anything help would be new. THank you

i think there is two chance one head set pin is short. othere setting of sound in control panel is mistake look it carefully . thanks
