Hello,
Try this 1
You can download all the drivers from the manufacture's website.
Click on the below link and follow the instructions.
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=3232101&taskId=135&lang=en&cc=us&prodSeriesId=3232028&prodTypeId=12454
Select your "Operating System" and download the drivers.
Good Luck

Thank you for the link.
Now I need to find out which file I need, as I do not know if the integrated ethernet/network hardware is Gigabyte, Broadcom, or whatever, or even if it's firmware I need.
Hardware Wizard says I have a device named 82557-based Integrated Ethernet, but the device cannot start. In any case, it is not a plug-in NIC.
PC is a second hand HP dc7700, if that is any help.
So far I have not been able to locate drivers or firmware that is related to whatever device I have.
Any further help is much appreciated.
Thanks again.

Hello,
Try this 1
82557 seems to be a intel's chipset. Try installing the Intel drivers from the above given link.
Try "Intel Gigabit Network Connection Drivers for Microsoft Windows XP"
Good Luck
