How to get the euro sign to work

Hello,
I am trying to use the euro sign that is next to the number 4 on my sony vaio laptop. I have tried ctrl it just gives me the £ sign this is above the number 4 and the euro sign I have tried all combinations getting very frustrated just need to know how do I get to use it please help me if you can

Hold down the Alt Gr key and then press the number 4 key.

CTRL ALT 4 = € or whatever number the euro symbol is on
