I had the same problem with the volume (red X on it) and I have a toshiba satelite laptop and found an eay solution. The steps I went through so you know.....Went to device manager clicked solutions but nothing. Also tried to download the updated software from the toshiba site but still nothing. Then had device manager update the software and it stated that the I already had the latest version. At last, I choose the option in device manager to roll back the original software installed in the computer. That fixed my probem!!!!
I had sound within 1 minute.

Have you tried to reinstall the realteck drivers...if the problems are due to that then you can easily solve it, by downloading the drivers from www.realtek.com.tw/. But if your PC has been physically damaged then it will cost you some money to repair it.
Hi guys,
I had the same problem on June 2, 2010. My Toshiba Satelitte A100 suddenly appeared "NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE IS INSTALLED" with the speaker volume (red X on it).
The steps I went through: Went to Control Panel and clicked the Device Manager. It said "THE REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION WITH SRS IS INSTALLED." But the speaker volume was still with the red X. I assumed it didn't work. I tried three times. The results were still nothing. At last I was very upset, then I shutdowned my laptop.
This morning I switch on my laptop again. It surprisingly are no problem anymore.
So guys, after you work with The Device Manager, please try to shutdown and restart again your laptop.
You can try it.
