Usually, each laptop comes with a physical switch (on/off) to activate the wifi. Are you sure you have switched it on ?
Ya jeff
I have switched it on.......But I am skeptical about the driver not functioning properly

You need to get the proper driver for your specific laptop. What's the brand / model ?
Acer Aspire one D255

Your drivers are here : http://support.acer.com/product/default.aspx?modelId=2987

First of all, use the Hardware detection utility mentionned in the page ( http://global-download.gateway.com/FilesDownload/HWID/HWVendorDetection.exe ) to know what WiFi chip is used on your specific laptop (Realtek or Intel or Atheros or Broadcom)
