Hi hrdunl,
In the forum, it appears your system configuration has Windows 8 so some steps mentioned here are relevant to Windows 8 only.
Check in the Device Manger if the Fingerprint Reader is listed under Biometric Devices. Also, you may find it under Other Devices. If the Fingerprint Reader is listed try updating the driver from the below mentioned link and see if the issue is fixed:

Note: to open device manager in Windows 8, press Windows key + X and select Device Manager from the menu at the bottom left side of the screen.
If the fingerprint reader is not listed this might be a hardware failure.
