Added second monitor to laptop, now runs really slow

My boss's second computer (laptop) the screen was hard to see. We are bookkeepers. Her #1 rule: we don't make computer changes during tax season. I thought adding another to use while in the office on the laptop would make it easier to see. Not. Now the laptop runs really slow and I have to press hard on the keys to put in the password.
Is there a way to access the control panel to change the monitor back to the laptop???? I need a shortcut key with just the keyboard.

I suggest you first try to unplug the monitor cable before you turn on the laptop.

We have tried that. I need to get to the control panel to change the monitor back to the laptop monitor and not the extra one.

Is there a couple of keys that I can use to get there????
