As far as making a connector, what ever tool you prefer, or can get your hands on.
Be certain to maintain the twist in each pair to maintain integrity. Also, the bending radius WILL AFFECT the transmit rates. Keep your wire path away from motor (yes treadmills count), like air conditioners or fan motors. Keep away from lights, especially flourescent ones.
