My portable hard drive just wont show

Hello,
i have tried and tried. But my portable hard drive just wont show. The computer makes the same sound as what it does for devices that do show but this one doesn't. the light on the side of the hard drive lights up the hard drive is running i just cant see it. i saw someone else question and tried to use that answer but i have hundreds of the grey patches
