Is your desktop Windows XP?
XP can take a little while to install USB drivers. Did you leave it for a couple of minutes?

i wonder coz if the usb port is intermittent y , i can use my flash drive to backup my data in my pc for an hour and every time i use it work fine.? as well if the system board is busted why there are no error found during bootup and no bsod ocurs. hoping for your expertise guys....
Drivers from the CD are dated. The most up to date drivers are always from the manufacturers website.
Have you tried other USB ports.
does the mouse work on other computers?

if a cd came with the mouse , run it
if it didnt just connest it , and windows will install the drivers
this a one time process
you need not install it again
