Hello,
Here are the answers to your questions:
1. Operating System uses resources every time we use it. We install programs, browse the web, download stuff and all of that leaves data on our computer. More data means more work and that is how our computers gets slower.
2. Most commonly, you will expect slow responsiveness of your software and operating system in general.
3. You can do many things to speed up your computer. Install and use software that you really need, regularly clean temporary data on your computer and so on. The best way to speed up your computer is to invest money in SSD drives or RAM.
4. You can use some free disk check tools to get more information about your hard drive(s).
5. When any of these components are broke you wont make it to Windows desktop for sure.
