Desktop icons and Task bar don't show up

So last night my boyfriend updated his computer. Then today, no icons on the desktop, no task bar, and when I do ctrl+alt+del, the screen goes black for like a minute, then back to the blank desk top. Can't even see the mouse on it, just the generic windows symbol back ground. We just installed windows 7 professional service pack 1 on it last night as well.

Open the task manager, select new task and type explorer exe, then ok
