This can be frustrating. I would suggest reading up on HDMI versions:

and make sure you have a compatible cable.
That said my limited experience with HDMI on my devices is it many times requires cycling the devices to get them to talk properly. In fact I many times have to cycle my receiver when streaming a video from my PS3 because the audio becomes garbled right in the middle of a show.
