Laptop not populating desktop icons

It is very frustrating, I am running windows 8 and my laptop is starting up, i put in the password, it goes all the way to ... right before the icons pop up, and freezes. I cant get into it at all. I can Ctrl alt delete for task manager, but nothing else.. Please someone help.. i have no idea about computers.

Have you any at all had any success with this issue you're trying to resolve?

Derenza, thank you for responding... I pulled up Ctrl- alt-delete and went searching for the control panel... Patiently I undid everything I did that day and then cleaned the registry. Thank you so much for your help... you guys are awesome.
