Why can't you type on your new mac, but the mouse works?

I had the same problem....I had new batteries in the keyboard and followed all the directions......and then figured out that there is a small button type device on the right side of the keyboard that must be pressed to turn on the device. It is very similar to a wireless laptop or pro mac . It fixed the problem and was so simple. Hope this helps!
