Hi DCHILLER,
This is usually as a result of a hard drive failure. I hope you make regular backups.
You can check if the drive has failed with a program called ChristalDiskInfo. Google it and you should see links to download an ISO. Burn this to a DVD and then put it in the failing machine. Now boot from the disk (hit [F12] on boot and then choose your DVD drive as the boot device) and follow any instructions. It will take a few minutes to check and will come up with a report of the drive is good or bad.
Its some time since I used this tool, but if you have problems get back to me and I will go into more detail.
