Hello,
I want to upgrade my old computer (An eMachines 210.) which has a Celeron 2.3 GHz S478 400 FSB cpu, I would like to install a Pentium 4 3.4 GHz S478 800 FSB cpu. The motherboard is a Trigem Imperial 1.10 with a chipset: Northbridge Intel i845GL revision B1 Southbridge Intel 82801DB ICH4 with a multiplier coefficient of 23, LPCIO: LPC47M192 I already have 1.25 Gigabytes of DDR RAM installed, 2 Gigabytes is the maximum possible on the board. The graphics is 3D AGP Intel Extreme Graphics. The BIOS is Phoenix version 6.00.
I would prefer not to change the motherboard, so what would be the fastest Pentium 4 cpu I could put on the board? Also would it be a matter of "plug and play" or would anything else be necessary. When I do buy a cpu I don't want to get ripped off!
Thanks for your time spent reading this!

You should be fairly safe getting any model of the 478 pin Pentium 4's, and they will be dirt cheap these days on ebay etc (dont pay over £20 for a 3ghz or ya getting ripped off). Installation shouldnt be a major issue, just check the bios after installing new chip, it shouldnt need any adjustments unless its been manually set to specific bus speeds for the celeron. Only thing to remember is as the speed increases so does the heat, stock intel fans are notoriously loud and rubbish at keeping CPUs cool, maybe invest in a custom cooler with heatpipe technology. I can't say if the board will take a P4 Prescott, although they are slightly faster than the basic P4 they do run much hotter as my spare PC needed a Zalman heatsink & fan to keep it going in the summer heat.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. If I can pick your brain once more, I looked on the Intel site and the i845GL Northbridge chip and an FSB 533 was indicated so that would mean that I should look at the P4 3.06 GHz cpu at 533 FSB?? Is there a software way of altering the motherboard FSB support?
I am new to such details and I'm gleaning info.
Thank you.
