Cannot open usb3 portable disk to view files

Hello,

I am running windows 10.

When I plug in my external drive I can see my usb3 portable disk drive in "my computer", it is listed as "F". When I click on F the message tells me to insert a disk, when I look in properties it shows "0 GB"to view files. it appears that the disk "drive" is recognised but not the actual disk itself . When I check the drivers the message is that they are the latest. Out of ideas....................any thoughts please?
