Missing data to help you effectively.
Suppose you want color cells B1:F1, IF A1 is not empty.
Try to do:
Select cells you want color: B1:F1
CF MENU --> NEW RULE --> USING FORMULA
Type it at field: =$A$1<>""
Choose ORANGE as fill format
OK
