Hi dhifaaf,
You are talking about an external drive, right? Please open Disk Management and check if the drive is recognized there. Does it have a drive letter and a correct file format? Do you have important data stored on the drive and is formatting an option?
I would recommend you to test the drive on another PC and with another USB cable. If the drive is working normally, backup all data, connect the drive back on your PC and format it. If the drive is not recognized and formatting is not possible, open Device Manager and check if there is a driver compatibility issue with the USB devices. You may need to manually download Windows 8.1 drivers for your drive. Check that on the drive manufacturer’s web page.
