They don't use their email, just logged in for games, so maybe a year or so

After a few months of inactivity, like not accessing the account, Gmail considers the account as obsolete and deletes the account from the server, which makes recovery impossible.
So, your best bet is to create new accounts, ensuring you register recovery info and accessing them regularly.
