How to SUM responses from cells with list data validation

Hello,

I want know if it is possible to total (SUM) the number of responses I have on cells which have the data validation.

I have set up a spreadsheet up on excel to input information received from a survey conducted. I have done data validation on the majority of the cells (drop down box/list) of responses such as Yes or No OR Confident, Somewhat Confident, Not Confident.

What I want to do is see how many Yes or No responses I received in total Or How many Confident response I received etc..

Any ideas would be most appreciated
