I am working with excel 2007 and the dates I enter show up completely different than the data I input.
For example: I enter 050116 (no separators) and it shows up as 3/17/37. I have tried using the text to columns tab and the format tab and nothing has changed.

Hi Mymunchkins2,
What you are entering is not a date but a number, which is then converted to a date (1/1/1900 + 50116 days).
Why not enter as 05/01/16?
