What is New Pokémon Snap about?

New Pokémon Snap (also known as Pokémon Snap 2) is a sequel to the original Pokémon Snap game that was initially released back in 1999. What makes those two games different from the rest in the franchise, is their relaxing atmosphere, while there are still plenty of beautiful and vivid colors.

In this new opus, your main goal is to take photos of Pokémon. You play Professor Mirror’s research assistant as you explore the Lentai region and try to unravel the mystery of why some of the Pokémon, as well as their environment, are glowing - those Pokémon are called Illumina Pokémon.

What are some tips and tricks?

Now that the hype is real, here is our selection of tips and tricks to make the most of New Pokémon Snap.

Enjoy the glow

Taking photos of Pokémon gets you points. However, this is especially true if you take pictures of glowing Pokémon, as well as photos of them reacting to Illumina Orbs - so you might want to throw one of those orbs on them. And also, throw some Fluffruit. What is their exact reaction to these? Sorry, no spoilers.

It’s not always about the quality

Taking beautiful snaps is important. However, the more different Pokémon you capture on camera, the more experience you will get - even if the photos aren’t perfect. You will also discover that capturing flying Pokémon can be very challenging, so just go on and take that photo. For every expedition, you get a film containing 72 pictures.

Be fast

Pokémon are always moving. You should know that you don’t have to stop to take a photo - blurry photos don’t exist in New Pokémon Snap. To go even further, you can also use the D-pad buttons to get a quick, 180° view.

Another great tip is speeding up your reticle together with the camera movement. However, you will have to find the right balance in order to be able to take beautiful photos.

Quality

Even if your photos don’t always have to be perfect, their quality remains important and will bring you different stars (bronze to diamond). There are several factors that you should consider:

  • The Quality Itself: A nice picture means a picture well centered, with a Pokémon that is at the right distance.

  • Don’t Leave a Pokémon Alone: What will make your photo even better, is capturing other Pokémon in the background.

  • The Right Moment: Just like in real life, even if your photo is technically excellent, what will make it even better is capturing the right moment - we recommend aiming for unique and rare moments, on a beautiful background.

Hidden Pokémon

Some Pokémon will do whatever it takes not to be seen: so scan the environment, check lakes, rivers, and trees, pay attention to small movements, and also, don’t forget to light up your way.

Equipment

New Pokémon Snap offers players different tools - and there is a reason for that. They may encourage the Pokémon to do something new and you can use them without limitation. We recommend taking advantage of all the items, the scan and music options as much as possible.
