A usb port can be any number of 'com port' numbers. com1 and 2 are normaly reserved for serial ports.
if you unplug the the adapter cable from the computer, then go into device manager and look under the com ports. look at what is there. then, whilst device manager is open, plug in your adapter cable.
it will install and add a com port to your device manager. this will be your com port number that you are after.
