Turn on screen goes white then black & nothin

I have an HP Pavillion entertainment dv7 laptop, My battery has no charge and when plugged in will turn on, make a little sound then stop, lights are on but screen goes from white to black and won't do anything else, can anyone help?

HI there,

Let it be idle with adapter for half an hour,then press power button to switch it on.
