How to have option 1)open and 2)save

Hello,

windows xp
excel 2003
excel 2007

when I click an .xls,.xlsx or .xlsm file default is "save as" but I would like to have option
open
or
save

what is the suggestion.;

I tried cotrol panel folder options-filetgype-choose .xls type-advancedd-checked "confirm open after download"

NO EFFECT

Could you please give further details. When you say "click an .xls", do you mean right clicking on the icon? If so the option to open is always there with XP. Since the file is not open, it has already been saved and you will only get the save as option.
