Hard drive not opening on PC. Can you help please

I have an external hard drive that has worked with my mac without problem but now my mac has broken down and I have plugged the hard drive to a pc laptop and it shows up on the list of devices but I can not open the hard drive.
Can any one help please?

Your external drive must be formatted either in NTFS or FAT32 so that your PC can read it. If it was formatted in HFS+ by the Mac then it can't be read by the PC. I suggest you read the web page for more information:

Hi, juliophoto

Xpcman has a point. You drive may be formatted in HFS+, which makes it unusable in Windows.
You should reformat it. Keep in mind that this way you will delete all your data. Back it up first. If you have no access to a Mac, you could search for some software for Windows or try some Linux version.
