Icons disappeared from my screen

Hello,

I have an Inspiron desktop computer, from Dell, which I purchased last month....I have a brand new monitor from Dell, purchased this month, Sept. It worked perfect until I activated my Microsoft Office software this afternoon...didn't have any problems with the software....but, I left the computer on and 20 minutes later...my Icons disappeared from my screen...so I did a restart and never had anything come back on my monitor. Does this sound like a virus??
