Can't Connect My Laptop To External Monitor

Hello,
So I can't exactly connect my laptop (with a broken screen) to an external monitor. I have technically tried doing everything to connect it via VGA, but sadly my laptop screen won't come up on my monitor. I do know that it works, my dad and I have had it work on our TV, but then we couldn't figure out how to do it again since we had to reset my laptop in order to hack the administrator password. Could anyone help me? My laptop model is Compaq 50-110us. Please help-
