                    After plugging in the device, go to device manager (In run type "devmgmt.msc") In Device manager go to "Universal serial bus controllers" It should list the storage devices that you have connected to your PC. Right click and then click "Uninstall. Remove the drive and restart your system.

                    It seems that drive's driver software is not compatible with your laptop and it needs to be updated. I would suggest you to go to the device manager and update the driver software of the drive. After this connect it to the laptop and check whether it starts detecting by the system or not.
