Just a thought...
On the US vs UK keyboards the @ and " are swapped
The Alt key to the right of the space bar is replaced by an AltGr key

I looked at the shortcut keys but unfortunately it doesn't help with the @ symbol i have been practicing on this message here with the shortcuts, but thank you anyway.

What do you mean it doesn't help, alt+64 is universal for the @ symbol?
