External HDD fails to work on my laptop.

Hello, My laptop has both windows and Ubuntu partitions. windows stopped working 1 year ago though i access files via Ubuntu. the laptop stopped detecting my WD 250 GB external HDD though other USB's work well; and the external HDD works on other PC's. what could be the problem and how can it be resolved?

So, the Linux OS doesn't see the USB device? Do you think it might be driver issue? Can I ask if Linux even has drivers for WD external drives? I am not going to look for the specifications. Perhaps the format is not the same? What format is the drive in?

sorry I do not know the format of the external HD but inserting to the USB port makes the port inaccessible by other USB device until I restart the laptop.
