CANT GO TO SAFE MODE

Hello,
I HAVE A LAPTOP COMPUTER THAT WILL NOT LET ME GO INTO SAFE MODE. I'M USING WINDOWS VISTA. WHEN I TURN THE COMPUTER ON, ITS SAYS "GATEWAY" THEN GOES TO BLACK SCREEN WITH A CURSOR. IT WON'T LET ME DO ANYTHING. TRIED F8. THAT DIDNT WORK DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO.
