Hi,
Open VLC, go to Tools > Preferences and select Audio. Make sure Enable audio is checked and that the output settings are set properly.
If everything is correct, check your Mac's audio settings. Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Sound. Select Output and make sure the proper audio device is selected.
