Problem with headphones

Hello,
i have compaq presario v6000. my basic configuration is windows vista & i changed to xp..my speakers r good but when i use my headphones i am not able to hear anything in headphones and my speaker volume get increases when i connect my headphones to laptop.

in control panel go to ur sound card configuration's file eg:-C-media Realtek,then try to change the settings of the headphone there.sometimes it's volume may be checked mute,so check its volume also.
